Rudy Yu and The Rise Exhibit

There is no doubt that the Philippine art scene is on a #rise, and what can be more compelling than to hold an art exhibit which, coincidentally, is called “Rise”.

The #riseexhibit opens on May 29 at 6:00 PM, at the Art Elements Gallery in SM Aura Premier, and the show will run at until June23.  The exhibit will feature the best works of Rudy Yu, and with over 10 artworks to be featured, you will simply be at awe with the detail and harmony of watercolor, acrylic, pencil, pen that a master like Rudy Yu can achieve!

Art That Celebrates LIFE

Is Rudy Yu’s style Oriental-inspired? Western? Filipino?

For some, it can be a bit confusing, since Rudy is Chinese, who is raised here in the Philippines, migrated to the States, and stayed for a while in Singapore (talk about “United Nations” as a peg) who came back here in the Philippines However, his artworks can be summarized to a single style, and that is celebrating life.

All of his works is a depiction of Rudy Yu himself, as he shares his heritage, experience, travels, and life in general to all his works. Whether it is a ball park in the States, or an amusement park, or the even beautiful landscapes of Taal Volcano or the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, The Rise exhibit will be his way of sharing to his audience how he views life.

The Master of the Pen

Literally using a pen as his signature style, his use of this medium sparks most attention to most art collectors. A style that is uniquely Rudy Yu, his use of s pen to create different degree of depth, weight and detail to each of his artwork is simply extraordinary.

Paintings are usually appreciated from a certain distance since the detail of a piece fades the closer you approach a particular artwork. Rudy Yu focuses on detail, and you can clearly see that every leaf on a tree, or window in every single home, or even columns in a pillar are meticulously drawn.

A master who is willing to share his craft, Rudy Yu exclusively shared to Juice.ph what exact pen he is using for his masterpiece, and it is .05 point Rotring Technical Pen!

There Must Always be a Church or Sun

If there is another signature feature when it comes to Rudy Yu’s works that will be that inclusion of a church, or the sun, and even both.

His depiction of a church may vary from one painting to another, but there is one particular church that he has in mind as his inspiration.

“My inspiration is Molo Church,” he explained, and when we were not able to hear the name right the first time, he compared it to something that all of us can relate. “I am from Iloilo, and it is also famous for its Molo soup, and of course, Molo Church.”

As for the sun, the explanation is very simple. The same way he wanted it to be part of his paintings; we just cannot live without it!

Defining His Legacy

When asked about his legacy, Rudy Yu simply shrugged, which simply shows his humility even under the spotlight of a great artist.

“If the spotlight and all the recognitions are there then great, but recognition is not what I am aiming for,” he said. “I wanted to share my works so younger generations can have their own style and continue a legacy called art.”

Painting may be considered as his full time passion, but he also dedicates his free time by conducting free art lessons to children as he considers training future artists as his legacy. Rudy you added by saying “My goal is not for someone to be the next Rudy Yu. There is no right or wrong in art, but it is a matter of finding this niche that sets you apart from others.”

An Exhibit with a Cause

Part of the proceeds of the show will be given to the Negrense Volunteers for Change (NVC). When we asked why Rudy Yu chose this particular organization, his reason is simply heartwarming.

“When Yolanda struck the Philippines, donations and help are coming left and right,” he said, “but after some time, the story fades away and the donations fade along with them.”

“The problem is still there, and you still have all those victims who need help, so the support must continue.”

The Rise exhibit, in particular, has a double meaning, since it intends to help the Yolanda victims “rise” from their problems. Rudy Yu chose NVC, as the organization intends to help the fishermen who were victims of Yolanda to have their livelihood back.

The Rise Exhibit will surely bring in art collectors all over the country. Don't miss out this once in a lifetime opportunity.
